Do not overlook the lightning protection in the community: The absence of annual inspection for lightning rods and the lack of surge protection pose dual hazards.

Summer is a season with frequent thunderstorms, and lightning strikes in residential areas occur occasionally. These incidents are often closely related to the lack of complete lightning protection equipment and the absence of regular supervision. Among them, the annual inspection of lightning rods in residential areas has become a "blind spot", and the installation of surge protectors is either incomplete or ineffective, becoming a hidden threat to the safety of residents' lives and property, and urgently requires the attention of all parties.

Lightning disasters are one of the common natural disasters. Their destructive power not only directly damages buildings but may also cause fires, damage electrical equipment, and even result in casualties. According to relevant regulations, residential communities must install lightning protection devices and conduct regular safety inspections. For ordinary buildings, lightning protection inspections should be conducted once a year. However, in reality, most lightning rods in residential areas are in a situation of "installed but left unused", and the annual inspection work is merely a formality.

In many residential areas, especially those in old districts, lightning rods are exposed outdoors for a long time. Currently, in most residential areas, especially in old ones, surge protectors are not installed in the distribution boxes and weak current wells. Even those that have been installed have aged and become ineffective due to lack of regular maintenance. With the increasing number of household appliances, precision electronic equipment has higher requirements for voltage stability. If lightning enters the house through power lines and network cables, it is very likely to damage the circuit boards of household appliances, causing property losses. In severe cases, it may even lead to electrical fires.

To prevent lightning strikes in residential areas, two major shortcomings need to be addressed. Firstly, the responsibility should be clearly defined. The housing authority and meteorological department should take the lead in this, urging property management companies to fulfill their primary responsibility for lightning protection. They should regularly conduct inspections and maintenance of lightning rods, promptly replacing any corroded or damaged equipment, and eliminating blind spots in annual inspections. Secondly, knowledge about the installation and maintenance of surge protectors should be popularized. The community should be urged to install qualified surge protectors in the distribution room, floor distribution boxes, and residents' entrance ends, and to regularly check their operating status.

Lightning protection is a matter of utmost importance and cannot afford any degree of carelessness. The annual inspection of lightning rods and the installation of surge protectors may seem like insignificant details, but they directly affect the safety of every resident. Only by acknowledging the inadequacies of lightning protection equipment and addressing the shortcomings in supervision and protection can we build a solid defense line for lightning safety in the community, allowing residents to enjoy peace of mind during the thunderstorm season.
